The short answer

Families in Kingaroy choose a funeral director because one phone call takes care of everything that has to happen after a death, at any hour, so they can focus on each other. A good local funeral director will:

  • bring your loved one into care, day or night, and look after them with dignity
  • handle the legal paperwork, including registering the death in Queensland
  • book the cemetery or crematorium, church or hall, celebrant, flowers and live stream
  • give you clear prices in writing and plan a farewell that truly reflects the person
  • stay with you afterwards, from returning ashes to helping with a headstone

If you've never had to arrange a funeral before, you're not alone. Most people in the South Burnett only do it a handful of times in their lives, usually at the hardest moment. This guide explains, honestly, why families choose funeral directors in Kingaroy, what a funeral director does that's hard to do yourself, and how to choose the right one for your family.

We're Jason and Katrina Killick. We run Killick Family Funerals from our chapel at 44 Alford Street, Kingaroy, and our family has been caring for grieving families for more than thirty years. We'd rather you understood your choices than felt rushed into anything, so we've written this the way we'd explain it to a neighbour. You'll also find a few interactive tools along the way to help you think things through.

Do you have to use a funeral director in Queensland?

Not always, and we think you deserve a straight answer. Queensland law lets a family register a death themselves if no funeral director is involved, and the Queensland Government notes that the funeral director usually registers the death on the family's behalf.1 So legally, some families could handle parts of a farewell on their own.

In practice, though, almost every family in Kingaroy uses a funeral director, for good reasons:

  • Burials in South Burnett council cemeteries must be conducted by a funeral director, and need a council-approved burial application.2
  • A death must be registered within 14 days with Queensland's Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages,1 on top of the medical certificate, cremation permits or burial paperwork.
  • Your loved one needs proper care, including refrigeration, transport and mortuary care, which requires the right facilities and vehicles.
  • Everything happens in a short window, while you're grieving and often looking after other family members.

One thing families can easily do themselves is place ashes in a council memorial garden or columbarium wall. South Burnett Regional Council lets families lodge a Placement of Ashes application without a funeral director.2 We're always happy to help with it anyway.

9 reasons families choose a Kingaroy funeral director

Every family is different, but these are the reasons South Burnett families tell us they decided to call a funeral director, and what we'd encourage you to expect from whichever one you choose.

1Someone answers at 2am

Death doesn't keep office hours. A good funeral director in Kingaroy answers the phone at any hour and comes to you, whether that's at home, Kingaroy Hospital, a nursing home or somewhere else. At Killick Family Funerals, a member of our family answers every call, at least two staff come to bring your loved one into our care, and we never charge an after-hours surcharge. Because we're based right here in Kingaroy, we can usually be with you within the hour anywhere in the South Burnett.

2The paperwork is done properly, and on time

After a death, a doctor completes the medical certificate of cause of death, usually within two working days.3 Then the death has to be registered within 14 days,1 the official death certificate ordered, and cremation permits or burial applications lodged. Get one detail wrong and the funeral can be delayed. Your funeral director handles all of it, and gives you the death certificate you'll need for banks, Centrelink, super funds and the estate.

3Your loved one is cared for with dignity

Families want to know the person they love is safe and treated gently. A funeral director provides proper refrigeration and mortuary care, dresses your loved one in their own clothes if you'd like, and can arrange a private viewing so you can say goodbye in your own time. Jason has spent decades doing this work, and he cares for every person as if they were his own family.

4Local knowledge you can't Google

Local funeral directors know how things work here: how South Burnett Regional Council handles burial bookings at cemeteries like Taabinga on Pioneer Avenue, which halls have parking for a big crowd, which clergy and celebrants are available, and which local florists and caterers will look after you. That local knowledge is the difference between a day that runs quietly in the background and one that's full of last-minute surprises.

5One phone call coordinates everything

A funeral involves a surprising number of people: the doctor, the registry, the cemetery or crematorium, the church or venue, the celebrant, the florist, the printer, the caterer, the newspaper or notice page, and family travelling from Brisbane or interstate. A funeral director becomes your single point of contact, so you're not juggling a dozen phone calls while you're grieving.

6Clear prices, and the law on your side

Since 1 July 2022, Queensland funeral businesses have had to publish an itemised price list on their website and at their premises, show their cheapest package separately, and give you an itemised quote within 48 hours of you asking.4 A trustworthy funeral director goes further and explains every line in plain English. We publish our full price list on our pricing page, every quote is itemised in writing before anything goes ahead, and payment plans are available.

7A farewell that's truly theirs

No two lives are the same, so no two funerals should be. A funeral director helps you turn memories into a farewell: a photo tribute set to their favourite songs, a horse and cart, a custom coffin, a service at the footy club or on the family property, or a simple graveside goodbye. Katrina creates our families' multimedia tributes herself, and every service in our chapel can be live streamed and recorded for family who can't be there.

8Room to grieve

The days after a death are exhausting. Handing the logistics to someone you trust gives you time to sit with family, ring friends, and simply be together. Many decisions can wait a day or two, and a good funeral director will never rush you. We're happy to sit at your kitchen table, put the kettle on and let you talk things through.

9Support that doesn't end at the funeral

Our care continues after the service: returning ashes, helping with a headstone or plaque, lodging a placement of ashes at a council memorial wall, and pointing you to grief support and to any Centrelink bereavement help you may be entitled to. In a town like Kingaroy, we'll probably see you at the shops, and we always want to be able to look you in the eye.

Local and family-owned, or part of a big company?

Not every funeral home that looks local is locally owned. Across Australia, many funeral homes keep their original family name after being bought by large national or listed companies, and some regional funeral businesses are run from head offices in other cities. Neither is wrong, but it's worth knowing who you're dealing with.

When you're comparing funeral directors in Kingaroy, it's fair to ask:

  • Who owns the business, and where are decisions made?
  • Will the person I meet today be the person caring for Mum or Dad, and running the service?
  • Where will my loved one be cared for, and which crematorium do you use?
  • Is anyone on commission, or under pressure to sell extras?

Killick Family Funerals is independent and owned by our family, here in Kingaroy. When you call, you speak to Jason, Katrina or one of our kids, and the people you meet at the arrangement are the people who'll be there on the day. Questions families ask us

Why do people choose funeral directors in Kingaroy?

Most families choose a funeral director because one call takes care of everything after a death: bringing their loved one into care at any hour, the legal paperwork, cemetery or crematorium bookings, the venue, celebrant and flowers, and the running of the day. A local Kingaroy funeral director also knows the South Burnett's cemeteries, churches and halls, so the farewell runs smoothly.

Do I have to use a funeral director in Queensland?

Not for every step. Queensland lets families register a death themselves if no funeral director is involved. However, South Burnett Regional Council requires burials in its cemeteries to be conducted by a funeral director, and most families find the paperwork, care and coordination are best handled by a professional.

How soon should I call a funeral director after someone dies?

Call whenever you're ready. If the death was unexpected, call 000 first. If it was expected, the doctor or palliative care team will confirm the death. After that there's no need to rush. Killick Family Funerals answers 24 hours a day on 1800 607 880.

Can I choose any funeral director if someone dies in hospital or a nursing home?

Yes. If your loved one dies at Kingaroy Hospital, another hospital or an aged care home, you're free to choose any funeral director. Simply let the staff know who you've chosen and the funeral director will arrange everything from there.

How much does a funeral director cost in Kingaroy?

At Killick Family Funerals, an unattended cremation is $2,950 all-inclusive, a burial service starts from $6,540 plus cemetery fees, and a simple cremation service is $7,640. All prices include GST and every quote is itemised in writing before anything goes ahead.

Who registers a death in Queensland, and how long does it take?

Usually the funeral director registers the death with Queensland's Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages on the family's behalf. The death must be registered within 14 days, and the funeral director can then order the official death certificate for you.

Do funeral directors charge extra after hours?

Some do. Killick Family Funerals never charges a surcharge for after-hours transfers or arrangements, whether you call at midday or at 2am.

Can a funeral in Kingaroy be live streamed?

Yes. We can live stream and record a service from a single venue for $330, or across two venues for $440, so family and friends who can't travel can still be part of the farewell.

Can I place or scatter ashes myself in the South Burnett?

Yes. South Burnett Regional Council allows families to lodge a Placement of Ashes application without a funeral director. Council ash memorial areas are at Blackbutt, Kumbia, Memerambi, Murgon, Nanango, Proston, Taabinga (Kingaroy) and Wondai.

Can I plan my own funeral in advance?

Yes. Pre-planning means your family knows exactly what you want, and pre-paying can lock in today's prices. Our plan ahead page explains how it works, or call us for a no-obligation chat.
