What should I do first if someone dies in Wondai?

  • If the death was expected and happened at home, you don't have to call anyone straight away. Within 48 hours, let their doctor or palliative care service know, so a cause of death certificate can be organised. (qld.gov.au)
  • If the death was sudden or unexpected, call 000.
  • If they died at Wondai Hospital or in an aged care home, the staff will guide the first steps. You're free to choose any funeral director. Just tell them you'd like Killick Family Funerals, and we'll arrange the transfer. Wondai Hospital is run by Darling Downs Health.

Then call us whenever you're ready. There's never an after-hours surcharge for a transfer, even at 2am. We'll also register the death with Births, Deaths and Marriages for you. In Queensland, that must be done within 14 days. (qld.gov.au – Register a death) For a step-by-step checklist, read our guide on what to do when someone dies in Queensland.

Where are burials held in Wondai?

Wondai Cemetery is on the Bunya Highway, on the Murgon side of town. It's one of 11 cemeteries managed by South Burnett Regional Council. According to Council's fact sheet, Wondai Cemetery has:

  • a lawn section, where a memorial plaque sits on the ground or on a plinth
  • monumental graves, with a traditional headstone or monument
  • an ashes garden or columbarium wall for cremated remains

Other council cemeteries close to Wondai include Tingoora and Memerambi. (South Burnett Regional Council cemeteries fact sheet and cemeteries page)

How does a burial at Wondai Cemetery work?

Council's rules are straightforward:

  • A Burial Application must be approved by Council before the burial.
  • Burials must be carried out by a licensed funeral director.
  • Council fees must be paid in full before approval. Fees are reviewed each year, and Council doesn't accept payment plans for cemetery fees.
  • Graves are prepared for two burials as standard, so a couple can be laid to rest together.
  • Council places a temporary marker until a permanent plaque or headstone is installed.

We look after the application, the booking and the payment of council fees for you. Those fees are passed on at cost as a disbursement on your written quote. Council's cemetery enquiries line is (07) 4189 9100 if you'd like to check on a family grave or reservation.

What about plaques and flowers on the grave?

Council's fact sheet says plaques can be arranged through your funeral director, a stonemason or a plaque supplier, and a Cemetery Plaque – Monument Application is needed. Council prefers brass plaques, because they stand up well to the weather. In the lawn section, ornaments can stay for up to six months after the burial. After that, they're moved to a collection point, so keep anything precious at home.

Where can we hold a funeral service in Wondai?

A farewell can be held almost anywhere that feels right. Wondai families often choose:

  • a graveside service at Wondai Cemetery

  • Wondai Memorial Hall, on the corner of Mackenzie and Scott Streets, a council hall available for hire (South Burnett Regional Council)

  • our chapel at 44 Alford Street, Kingaroy

Tell us where you'd like to gather and we'll take care of the booking and coordination. On our price list, an external venue fee for a church or hall starts from $300. If family can't make the trip, we can live stream and record the service from a single venue for $330.
